According to reports, the French political party National Rally (RN) is promoting the use of surplus energy from nuclear power plants to mine Bitcoin, marking a significant shift from the party leader's previous anti-cryptocurrency stance.

Last week, Le Monde reported that National Rally leader and three-time presidential candidate Marine Le Pen now supports using idle nuclear energy for Bitcoin (BTC) mining. She reportedly actively promoted this plan during her visit to the Flamanville nuclear power plant on March 11. The party stated that this initiative would convert otherwise wasted electricity into "safe and extremely profitable" digital assets.

According to Le Monde, National Rally member Aurélien Lopez-Ligouri led this proposal in the French Parliament and drafted a bill to install mining infrastructure at facilities operated by energy giant EDF.

This shift reflects a broader consensus forming within the party that views Bitcoin as an important tool for achieving economic sovereignty. Lopez-Ligouri pointed out that the party aims to make full use of every unit of energy produced, eliminating energy waste.

Cointelegraph has reached out to the National Rally for comment, but has not received a response as of publication.

This pro-cryptocurrency stance marks a significant change from the party's policy in 2016, when Le Pen called for a complete ban on cryptocurrencies in France.

In a press statement released at the time, Le Pen stated that as currency becomes increasingly immaterial and digital, people will increasingly "lose ownership of their property." She described the phenomenon of cash disappearing in favor of digital currencies as an act of sacrificing human autonomy for the benefit of the global banking system.

Le Pen emphasized that currency is a national asset entrusted to the people. Based on this idea, she had pledged to prevent the use of cryptocurrencies in France.

There remains an ideological conflict within the party that contradicts the decentralized nature of Bitcoin. National Rally's financial chief Jean-Philippe Tanguy believes the party should not support monetary independence and reiterated the belief in centralized monetary policy.

Despite the ideological differences, the right-wing National Rally remains the most active political force in France advocating for cryptocurrency legislation.

Le Monde noted that while left-leaning parties continue to focus on the environmental impact of mining and its association with illegal financial activities, the National Rally has attracted numerous cryptocurrency lobbyists and entrepreneurs who view the party as a pro-business political force.
