After the release of Grok 4, the XAI team disclosed their latest development plans, while founder Elon Musk made bold predictions about artificial intelligence (AI).
During a live broadcast on the X platform on Thursday, the XAI team stated that the initial public release of Grok 4 is based on the company's sixth foundational model. The seventh version is currently being trained and is expected to be completed in "a few weeks," with improvements focusing on "visual weaknesses."
This update is particularly significant in the context of Musk's grander plans. During the live stream, he mentioned that Grok will interact with the real world through Tesla's Optimus robot.
Musk, who is also at the helm of electric vehicle and robotics company Tesla, added in a post on the X platform that Grok will be integrated into Tesla cars by "next week at the latest."
Musk stated that this will allow Grok to test whether its theories are effective in the real world, indicating that the chatbot may transcend text-based outputs and enter the realm of scientific experimentation.
Musk expressed his expectation that Grok will "discover practically useful new technologies by next year at the latest, possibly by the end of this year." He added:
Musk is no stranger to making grand statements about AI. Last month, he mentioned that XAI would retrain Grok based on a new knowledge base free of "garbage" and "uncorrected data," even suggesting that AI might rewrite history in the process.
During the live stream, Musk also stated that AI will bring about an economic scale "a thousand times, or even a million times larger than our current economy." He even referenced the Kardashev Scale:
The Kardashev Scale measures a civilization's level of advancement based on its energy consumption, proposed by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964. A Type I civilization utilizes all the energy available on its planet, a Type II civilization captures the energy of its star, and a Type III civilization harnesses the energy of an entire galaxy.
The XAI team also hinted at the upcoming release of a programming AI model that has already been trained. The new model is said to be "both fast and intelligent," with a release expected in a few weeks.
This news comes after XAI secured $10 billion in new capital earlier this month, indicating its commitment to challenging OpenAI, intensifying the competition in the AI field.
At the end of May, the company also "principally agreed" to a $300 million deal to integrate the AI chatbot Grok into the Telegram platform.
