Veteran of the gaming industry and former Daybreak Game Company (formerly Sony Online Entertainment) CEO John Smedley has ventured into the Web3 gaming space, launching a AAA shooter game based on the Tezos Layer 2 (L2) blockchain, Etherlink.

According to a statement shared with Cointelegraph on Thursday, Smedley's Distinct Possibility Studios (DPS) raised $30.5 million in a funding round led by Bitkraft, a venture capital firm focused on gaming, and European hedge fund manager Brevan Howard.

The funds will be used to develop their new open-world massively multiplayer online first-person shooter (MMOFPS) Reaper Actual, which will integrate Etherlink to enable tradable Web3 components such as characters, bases, and skins.

"The Tezos Foundation and the development team behind Etherlink share a common vision with us that gaming is paramount," Smedley told Cointelegraph. "The developers prioritized building a blockchain that reflects this philosophy; this is embodied in their slogan: Play, Own, Trade."

Smedley is best known in the gaming industry for co-creating EverQuest, a 3D fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released by Sony Online Entertainment in March 1999.

He also co-developed the free-to-play MMOFPS game PlanetSide 2, which features large-scale battles supporting up to 2,000 players simultaneously across vast areas of land.

The latest funding round supports the accelerated development of Reaper Actual, which will be available at launch through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and reaperactual.com.

Smedley teased the new game in a March post on X, showcasing a photo with PlanetSide 2 creative director Matt Higby and Fallout artist Tramell Ray Isaac.

The DPS team will announce the release of its "Foundation" Alpha version in the coming weeks, which will include game access and on-chain tradable assets.
