Reuters reported on Thursday that tech giant Apple is reportedly considering using artificial intelligence technology to accelerate the design process of its device-specific chips.
According to a segment from a meeting video, Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji, pointed out in a speech at last month's ITF World Conference in Belgium that one of the key insights the company has gained is the need to adopt cutting-edge tools for chip design.
Srouji emphasized, "EDA (Electronic Design Automation) companies play a crucial role in supporting our complex chip designs. Generative AI technology is expected to complete more design work in a shorter time, which could greatly enhance production efficiency."
The report mentioned that two industry-leading electronic design automation companies, Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys, are also seeking to integrate AI technology into their product services.
In his speech, Srouji detailed Apple's journey in custom development from the early iPhone processors to the latest chips powering Mac desktops and the Vision Pro augmented reality headset.
While Srouji's remarks suggest that Apple hopes to begin leveraging AI to accelerate its engineering team's chip design work for the first time, AppleInsider reported that Apple has actually been applying AI technology in its design field for years.
AppleInsider noted that for many years, Apple has relied on third-party EDA companies that have already integrated AI and machine learning technologies into chip design.
The report further added that Synopsys stated that generative AI technology helps create entirely new methods for chip design, which aligns with the technological direction Apple relies on.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that software giant Microsoft plans to cut thousands of jobs, particularly in its sales department, as the company streamlines its workforce while increasing its focus and investment in AI.
The company has accelerated its investment in the AI field to keep pace with competitors and adapt to the rapidly evolving industry landscape, which is actively integrating AI technology into various products and services.
This week, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated that the total number of corporate employees will decrease in the coming years as generative AI and agent-based AI become more widely adopted.
