Haliey Welch, a social media personality widely known as the “Hawk Tuah Girl,” stated that the FBI conducted a brief investigation into her “meme coin disaster” after the failure of a token based on her image.

Welch revealed on the “Talk Tuah” podcast on May 21, 2025, that the FBI came to her grandmother's house, knocking on the door, hoping to speak with her about the Hawk Tuah (HAWK) cryptocurrency. Many crypto commentators labeled the token as a “liquidity exit scam.”

Welch mentioned that she handed her phone to the FBI and met with agents, “They questioned me and asked everything related to cryptocurrency.”

“They ultimately determined that I was not an issue, and I could leave,” Welch said.

Welch rose to fame after a street interview she posted on YouTube in June, where she answered questions about oral sex techniques.

The HAWK meme coin, based on her viral catchphrase, launched in early December and almost immediately lost 90% of its value. According to blockchain analytics firm Bubblemaps, alleged insider wallets and snipers bought and sold the token in large quantities at launch.

Welch stated on the podcast that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) also requested to see her phone, and she was cleared of any wrongdoing “two or three days” after sending it in.

Welch's lawyer, James Sallah, told TMZ in March that the SEC “ended the investigation without making any findings against Haliey or seeking any monetary sanctions.”

Welch admitted that she knew almost nothing about cryptocurrency before the launch of the HAWK meme coin and said she “trusted the wrong people” to handle the launch.

She claimed that a company (which she cannot name for legal reasons) completely controlled her X account, which posted videos promoting the meme coin.

Welch stated that someone sent her a video with lines to record, which was then posted on her X account by someone she trusted but also cannot name.

She added that on the day of the HAWK launch, she “had a vague feeling that something was off,” and was then pulled into a room where a group of people had her do a live conversation with YouTuber Stephen Findeisen (better known by his online name Coffeezilla).

“When Coffeezilla came online, they said ‘mute, mute,’” Welch said. “No one warned me about anything regarding this person, absolutely no one, they didn’t tell me he was a cryptocurrency expert, and he really is—he completely wrecked me.”

Welch stated that she only received a marketing fee, “not a penny from the token itself,” and claimed that the entire fee was used to pay legal and public relations costs.

Despite being legally cleared, Welch still takes some responsibility, admitting that she disappointed many fans who invested in the token:

“This makes me very sad; they trusted me, and I led them into a field I didn’t have enough knowledge to understand. My understanding of cryptocurrency was not sufficient to participate. I knew this, but I was still persuaded, I trusted the wrong people.”

In December, a group of HAWK buyers sued the alleged creators of the token, claiming that Alex Schultz, the Tuah the Moon Foundation behind the token, the token launch platform overHere Limited, and its founder Clinton So promoted and sold HAWK as an unregistered security.

Welch was not named as a defendant.
