The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced on May 5 that it has finalized the agenda and confirmed speakers for its upcoming roundtable, “Tokenization — Moving Assets Onchain: Where TradFi and DeFi Meet.” Scheduled for May 12 at the agency’s headquarters in Washington D.C., the event will explore how traditional and decentralized finance intersect through blockchain-based asset movement. Commissioner Hester M. Peirce, who leads the SEC’s Crypto Task Force, stressed the importance of the discussion:

Tokenization is a technological development that could substantially change many aspects of our financial markets. I look forward to hearing ideas from our panelists on how the SEC should approach this area.

The event will run from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will be open to the public both in-person and online, with no registration required for virtual attendance. Opening remarks will be delivered by Richard B. Gabbert, Chief of Staff of the Crypto Task Force, followed by a keynote from Chairman Paul S. Atkins and additional comments from Commissioners Caroline A. Crenshaw, Mark T. Uyeda, and Peirce.

The first panel, “Evolution of Finance: Capital Markets 2.0,” will be moderated by Jeff Dinwoodie of Cravath and include speakers from major financial institutions such as Fidelity, Nasdaq, Invesco, Franklin Templeton, Blackrock, Apollo Management, and DTCC. After a brief break, the second panel, “The Future of Tokenization,” will begin at 4 p.m. and conclude the event. Tiffany Smith of WilmerHale will moderate that discussion, which will feature Hilary Allen of American University, Gene Hoffman of Chia Network, Johann Kerbrat of Robinhood, Sidney Powell of Maple Finance, and others, including Angela Walch, an independent researcher. This session is expected to focus on long-term implications, use cases, and potential regulatory responses to tokenized assets in capital markets.

In a separate notice, the SEC also announced a date change for its decentralized finance (DeFi) roundtable. Originally set for June 6, “DeFi and the American Spirit” will now take place on June 9. All previously registered attendees have been notified and their registrations remain valid, while new participants may continue to register through the SEC’s website.

The SEC’s new Crypto Task Force launched a series of policy roundtables in March, signaling a notable shift in the agency’s approach to crypto oversight. The first session examined how crypto assets are classified under securities law. The second addressed the intricacies of crypto trading, and the third focused on the regulatory challenges of crypto custody. These discussions signify a shift towards a more collaborative and transparent approach to crypto regulation, moving away from the previous enforcement-centric model.
