Can DePIN Subvert the Cloud Computing Market? Acurast Gives the Answer

Recently, researchers from the Communication Systems Group at the University of Zurich, in collaboration with the Acurast Association based on Polkadot and other ecosystems, jointly released the research results of their cooperation - "Performance Analysis of Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks and Centralized Clouds". The research results prove that the decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) is an effective alternative to traditional centralized cloud computing platforms.

The advantage of DePIN lies in its ability to use blockchain technology and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to liberate data sovereignty, reduce reliance on centralized models, and improve the system's ability to resist potential failures. The latest research specifically emphasizes and evaluates Acurast, a new type of decentralized serverless cloud network that can utilize unused resources on smartphones to perform complex computing tasks, significantly improving the security and efficiency of cloud services.

The main findings of this research include:

  • Efficiency improvement: When handling computationally intensive tasks, Acurast demonstrates greater potential effectiveness than traditional cloud services such as Google Cloud Platform and Amazon AWS.

  • Energy consumption optimization: Compared to existing centralized servers, Acurast, which significantly reduces energy consumption, is a more environmentally friendly alternative.

  • Theoretical evidence: This research provides empirical evidence supporting the theoretical advantages of DePINs and demonstrates the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of Acurast in handling computationally intensive applications.

Jan von der Assen, a doctoral student and researcher at the University of Zurich's Communication Systems Department, stated, "The emergence of decentralized technology has opened up new possibilities for us to rethink how to manage and operate digital infrastructure. Acurast not only demonstrates the ability to challenge existing services, but may also provide a scalable, secure, and sustainable model for future computing services."

This research represents a new breakthrough in understanding and utilizing DePIN computing. For all industries using cloud services, especially those with a focus on privacy protection, DePIN provides a truly viable alternative.

The full version of the paper has now been publicly released and is scheduled to be presented at the DePIN forum at the upcoming 2024 International Conference on Blockchain Technology (ICBC).

About the University of Zurich Communication Systems Group

The Communication Systems Group (CSG) at the University of Zurich focuses on the research and development of network systems and communication mechanisms, dedicated to advancing communication systems, network security, and infrastructure.

About Acurast Association

Acurast Association is committed to breaking the existing monopoly in the cloud computing market by decentralizing and "democratizing" cloud computing services through the use of the mobile cloud service Acurast. This allows everyone to become part of the cloud through their mobile devices, providing developers with secure, efficient, and private computing resources, all of which are unrestricted and do not require permission.
