[Greece Passes Cryptocurrency Tax Framework: 10% Capital Gains Tax, 15% Tax on Staking and DeFi Income] Odaily reports that the Greek Parliament has passed a cryptocurrency tax framework. Effective January 1, 2027, net annual cryptocurrency gains exceeding €500 will be taxed at 10%; income from staking, crypto lending, and DeFi will be subject to a 15% income tax rate. Cryptocurrency losses exceeding €500 can be carried forward to offset future earnings over five years.
The new regulations clarify the tax treatment of cryptocurrency inheritance, gifts, and transfers by parents, with valuation determined based on prices on approved trading platforms. Contributing cryptocurrency to company capital is considered a taxable transfer; the sale of cryptocurrency is exempt from Greek digital transaction tax; if related income is paid in cryptocurrency, its taxable value will be determined based on the euro price of the asset at the time of the transaction.
Investors can voluntarily declare unreported cryptocurrency gains and eligible income within 12 months before and after the new regulations take effect. Late payment fees and interest will be waived if taxes are paid within 60 days of declaration. Whether cryptocurrency swaps will trigger a capital gains tax remains to be seen, and the Greek Ministry of Finance will release implementing rules. (Bitcoin.com News)
