[Report: Tether and Former White House Crypto Advisor Involved in $6.3 Million Consulting Arrangement, Sparking Conflict of Interest Concerns]
According to a report by Bitcoinist on October 18, an investigation published on October 15 revealed that stablecoin issuer Tether had a consulting arrangement worth approximately $6.3 million with Nxum, a company owned by former White House digital asset advisor Bo Hines, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
The report stated that the payments occurred during Hines' involvement in U.S. crypto policy work, including federal stablecoin legislation such as the GENIUS Act. Adjustments to rules for foreign stablecoin issuers, such as the length of compliance transition periods, could impact companies like Tether. Longer transition periods would be more favorable for companies already operating large-scale stablecoin businesses overseas.
The report also emphasized that the existence of a consulting relationship does not prove that any legislative decisions were purchased or improperly influenced, and the investigation did not identify any criminal behavior. Representatives for Hines stated that he had relinquished management of related business interests during his government tenure and complied with applicable requirements.
