Patrick Witt is out as executive director of the White House crypto council, and the CLARITY Act is still stuck in the Senate. I've been chewing on those two facts together all day.
Witt didn't storm out. His federal detail simply expired, which is a very Washington way to leave a job. Eleanor Terrett said she'd emailed the White House three times in a week asking whether he was still in the role and got no reply. With CPI at 3.7% and stocks getting hammered, I don't think crypto policy is anyone's top priority over there right now.
Why I care as someone building on the XRP Ledger: market structure decides which agency looks at what you ship. Without CLARITY, US teams are still guessing whether a token, a vault or a yield feature ends up in front of the SEC or the CFTC. That guessing costs real money in legal reviews, and it pushes a lot of decisions offshore or just onto the back burner.
Losing the person whose job was to keep that bill moving doesn't help. He's also the second person to leave that seat, which is a lot of turnover for a council that's meant to be the steady hand.
I'm not convinced it kills anything, though. Bills move when senators want them to, and staff changes rarely flip a vote. My honest guess is CLARITY doesn't pass this year, and if I were planning a US launch I'd assume it won't. Happy to be wrong on that one.
Who do you think replaces him, and would it change anything in the Senate?
