[South Korea Plans to Strengthen Cybersecurity Reviews for Financial Institutions, 130 Organizations Found with Security Flaws] Odaily Planet Daily reports that the South Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC) announced plans to enhance threat monitoring, increase the frequency of security assessments, and strengthen executive accountability. Industry reviews revealed that out of 555 financial companies, 130 had cybersecurity vulnerabilities, involving 16 prior security incidents. The FSC stated that approximately 100,000 pieces of customer information were exposed in total, including names, contact details, and identification numbers. Affected institutions include Streami, the operator of Gopax, and the cryptocurrency exchange platform Prabang, the latter of which previously disclosed a hacking incident on October 2 that led to the leakage of some customer personal information. Under the proposed reforms, large financial institutions will undergo at least two vulnerability assessments annually. Regulators also plan to enhance information sharing and are considering the use of AI to monitor the security status of smaller companies. In cases of urgent threats, regulators may conduct additional inspections outside of routine assessments. Investigations are still ongoing to determine whether the related incidents involved AI or were carried out by the same attacker. (Cointelegraph)
