[Eight U.S. States Sue OpenAI, Accusing ChatGPT of Misleading the Public and Endangering Children's Safety]
According to Deep Tide TechFlow on October 15, as reported by The Verge, eight U.S. states (Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana) have jointly filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. The lawsuit accuses the company of prioritizing profits over safety in the development of ChatGPT, alleging violations of consumer protection laws, misleading the public, and endangering children's safety.
The complaint states that OpenAI promoted ChatGPT as a tool 'designed with safety as a top priority and suitable for teenagers,' but in reality, it poses risks to vulnerable users. The company is accused of failing to adequately warn about potential dangers, collecting data from minors without sufficient safeguards, and not implementing adequate protective measures.
The lawsuit also cites multiple cases involving user harm and recent AI safety incidents, accusing OpenAI of neglecting necessary safeguards in its pursuit of profit. In response, OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri stated that the company has implemented industry-leading age-specific safety measures in ChatGPT (including parental controls and break reminders) and will continue collaborating with experts to develop additional safety mechanisms.
