[Eight U.S. States Sue OpenAI Over User Safety Issues]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on October 15, Wednesday, eight U.S. states filed lawsuits against OpenAI, accusing the company of misleading users about the safety of ChatGPT. The attorneys general of these states claim that the company failed to implement safeguards, contributing to user behaviors such as suicide, self-harm, and violence, including among teenagers, and that its operational practices violate state laws and regulations.
The lawsuit filed by Arkansas alleges that OpenAI is fully aware that such a powerful product requires concrete safeguards. It states that the company's leadership has publicly acknowledged the risks, and employees have repeatedly raised serious safety concerns. However, despite continuous warnings, OpenAI has not slowed down but instead accelerated the release of increasingly powerful models without adequate safety measures or testing, prioritizing growth and profits over safety.
The eight states participating in this joint lawsuit include Arizona, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia, in addition to Arkansas. Except for Arizona, the attorneys general of the other states are all Republicans. The states are seeking a court order to compel the company to change its safety operations, enhance protections for children, and compensate the states for damages.
