Michael Gubbins, head of Ireland's Criminal Assets Bureau, stated that local organized crime groups have started renting private safe deposit boxes to store crypto wallet private keys and seed phrases alongside cash, luxury watches, and passports, aiming to reduce the risk of asset seizure by law enforcement. The bureau has reported this trend to the government's Anti-Money Laundering Steering Committee.
Gubbins also mentioned that the use of cryptocurrency in criminal activities in Ireland remains relatively limited, with cash still being the primary form of funds in illegal activities like drug trafficking. Meanwhile, the bureau is handling a major seizure case involving approximately 6,000 BTC, some of which have already been successfully cracked and liquidated.
