Canada, with its lower temperatures, abundant energy resources, and ample land, has been seen as an alternative choice for Silicon Valley companies to build data centers. However, an increasing number of communities are opposing the expansion of server facilities. Ontario's Oakville and Alberta's Rocky View County have both suspended data center projects for a year, and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has also vetoed a data center construction plan near Winnipeg. Some residents are concerned about the high energy consumption, noise levels, and potential increase in electricity prices caused by large data centers. The Carney government believes that building data centers will help enhance Canada's digital sovereignty and announced a related framework on Thursday. The framework requires projects to create long-term local benefits, reduce environmental impact, and avoid passing electricity costs onto residents. Technology companies such as Amazon, Meta, and Anthropic have already signed on to these principles. Canada currently has five large operational data centers, with an additional 159 projects announced or under construction.
