[25 U.S. States Sue Trump Administration Over Linking Disaster Relief Funds to Election System Reforms]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on July 24, 25 U.S. states and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit in the federal court of Rhode Island on July 23 local time, seeking to block the Trump administration from tying portions of disaster emergency funds to state election management system reforms. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security had previously announced that conditions would be imposed on over $1 billion in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants. If states fail to submit plans to switch to devices that accept manually filled paper ballots instead of relying on electronic voting systems that use barcodes or QR codes for tabulation, 20% of the related grants will be temporarily withheld.
