[Four U.S. States Seek $1.4 Trillion Fine Against Meta in Alleged Youth Protection Violation Case]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, on July 7, court documents revealed that four U.S. states have filed a lawsuit against Meta, accusing it of designing Facebook and Instagram platforms to be addictive for young users and misleading the public regarding platform safety. They are seeking a fine of up to $1.4 trillion. Meta proposed this figure in response to the attorneys general's filings on how fines should be calculated if the states win the case. The lawsuit, jointly filed by California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, is set to go to trial next month in California. The potential fine is close to Meta's market value of approximately $1.5 trillion. Meta stated that the fine lacks evidentiary support and that a sanction of this magnitude is unprecedented in the history of consumer protection enforcement. The states' complaint documents have been sealed, but during a court hearing in June, the states indicated that the fine was calculated by multiplying the number of violations by the penalty amounts stipulated under state laws.
