[South Korean Government Considers Extending Sovereign AI Core GPU Support Program, Maximum Budget for Next Year Estimated at 4 Trillion KRW] Odaily Planet Daily reports that the South Korean government is considering extending its AI core resource GPU support program. On July 7, according to industry sources, the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea is investigating the capacity of major cloud service providers in the country to build additional GPUs, with the goal of extending the 'AI Computing Resource Utilization Infrastructure Enhancement Project.' The core of this project involves the government allocating budget to purchase GPUs, deploying them in cloud service provider data centers, and supporting their use by academia, industry, and research institutions. Last year, the South Korean government allocated a budget of approximately 1 trillion KRW for this project, and this year it has invested 2 trillion KRW, securing over 20,000 GPUs. The project was originally scheduled to conclude this year, but due to surging demand for advanced resources such as NVIDIA's next-generation GPU Vera Rubin, the government is formulating comprehensive countermeasures, including optimizing data center efficiency and securing new space. Reportedly, it has already applied to the Budget Office for an 'extra-limit budget' dedicated to GPU support. Industry estimates suggest that considering this year's GPU support budget and the government's intentions, the maximum budget for next year could reach 4 trillion KRW. Industry experts believe that compared to GPU supply itself, 'equipment installation space' will be the key to the project's success or failure, as running thousands of high-performance GPUs simultaneously requires substantial power supply and advanced cooling systems. However, the equipment installation space owned by South Korean companies is nearing saturation. (ETNews Electronics).
