**[Nobel Laureate: AI Cannot Recreate the Era of Rapid Economic Growth]**
Golden Finance reported on July 7 that Christopher Pissarides, the 2010 Nobel Prize winner in Economics, warned that artificial intelligence will not bring Western economies back to the era of rapid productivity growth—a period that may be gone for good. Pissarides stated that nearly 40% of jobs in the U.S. and U.K. will likely remain unaffected by AI, citing sectors such as caregiving and hospitality. Technology companies and governments are pinning their hopes on AI to revive the significantly slowed growth rates of recent decades. The weak performance of Western economies, particularly in Europe, has made policy trade-offs even more challenging. However, Pissarides noted that there is currently little evidence suggesting AI can boost productivity and questioned claims by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI founder Sam Altman that the technology will have a profound impact on employment. While the technology may yield some productivity gains, "I am skeptical about whether we will see a resurgence akin to the computer boom of the 1980s and 1990s," Pissarides remarked.
