[Claude Login Emails Reveal 'Implicit Location' Feature, IP-Based Location Inference Sparks User Privacy Concerns]
BlockBeats News, July 1: According to monitoring by Beating, Anthropic's AI assistant Claude has recently sparked user discussions due to location hints included in login verification emails. Some users noticed that Claude includes approximate login locations, such as country, region, or city, when sending login codes or security alerts. This detail has renewed attention on how AI service providers identify the source of user access. These locations are typically not GPS-accurate but are inferred based on IP addresses, network connections, and device information. When using VPNs, proxy servers, corporate networks, or mobile carrier networks, the location displayed in the email may not match the user's actual location.
Anthropic's privacy policy indicates that the company collects IP addresses, device information, connection details, and IP-inferred locations for purposes such as security, fraud prevention, and enforcing terms of service. Claude users appear to be particularly sensitive to this issue, partly because the service is not yet available in all regions. Cross-border usage, overseas accounts, and third-party intermediary services are relatively common in Chinese-speaking communities. Recently, feedback has emerged in Chinese user communities about accounts being deactivated or requiring re-verification, which some users have referred to as a 'wave of account suspensions.'
