[Industry Groups Urge U.S. Government to Increase Supply of Memory Chips]
According to a report by Jinse Finance on June 4, a coalition of U.S. business groups has stated that the global shortage of memory chips, driven by the artificial intelligence boom, is posing an increasingly severe risk to various industries, including automobile manufacturers and medical device producers. The coalition has urged the Trump administration to help boost the supply of these critical components.
On Wednesday, nine trade associations representing various industries sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Besent and Commerce Secretary Lutnick, warning that the memory chip shortage could disrupt critical supply chains and potentially drive up consumer goods prices in the short term.
The coalition pointed out that the expansion of AI data centers has consumed a disproportionate amount of memory chip production capacity, leading to "an unprecedented surge in memory chip prices and a significant reduction in the supply of memory chips for manufacturing and consumer markets."
In the letter, the industry groups urged the Trump administration to collaborate with memory chip manufacturers and chip buyers to expand production capacity within the jurisdictions of the U.S. and its allies. They also suggested leveraging trade agreement mechanisms or programs under the CHIPS Act to ensure supply chain security, with a focus on safeguarding supply across various market segments.
