According to reports from Korean media, Microsoft and Google are racing to negotiate DRAM 'three-year long-term contracts' with SK Hynix, 'breaking tradition' by introducing mechanisms like floor price guarantees and advance deposit payments. SK Hynix and Microsoft are in the final stages of ironing out the terms for a long-term DDR5 supply agreement, which will span three years starting this year and is valued at tens of trillions of Korean won. Key terms under discussion include: - Setting a price floor to prevent significant drops in DRAM unit prices during the contract period; - Requiring buyers to prepay 10% to 30% of the total contract value as a deposit. This appears to be the first time a memory manufacturer has introduced a floor price guarantee mechanism in a long-term agreement, and the advance deposit system is also quite rare. At the same time, SK Hynix is also negotiating with Google on long-term supply agreements for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and general-purpose server DRAM. It’s clear that top tech companies’ procurement strategies have shifted from 'price optimization' to 'securing supply volume as a priority,' and they’re willing to take on higher price rigidity risks and capital costs to achieve this.
