[Maryland Man Faces Up to 30 Years in Prison for Alleged $54 Million Uranium Finance Hack] According to The Block, Maryland resident Jonathan Spalletta is facing up to 30 years in prison for allegedly hacking the decentralized exchange Uranium Finance twice in 2021. The indictment reveals that Spalletta's first attack resulted in the theft of approximately $1.4 million, and weeks later, he exploited a smart contract vulnerability to steal an additional $53.3 million, leading to the exchange's closure due to financial depletion. Spalletta reportedly used the stolen funds to purchase millions of dollars worth of rare Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering cards, as well as a piece of "original wing material from the Wright Brothers' airplane, which astronaut Neil Armstrong carried to the lunar surface during the first moon landing." In a statement, U.S. prosecutors noted that Spalletta had once claimed, "Cryptocurrency is just fake internet money," but emphasized that theft is theft. As of February 2025, U.S. authorities have seized $31 million worth of cryptocurrency tied to the April 2021 hack.
