[U.S. Federal Court Dismisses Terrorism-Related Lawsuit Against Binance and Changpeng Zhao]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that U.S. Manhattan federal judge Jeannette Vargas has dismissed a civil lawsuit attempting to hold Binance and its founder CZ accountable, accusing their trading activities of aiding terrorist organizations in carrying out global attacks. The judge ruled that the 535 plaintiffs (including victims and their families) failed to reasonably demonstrate that the defendants 'intentionally colluded with, participated in, or ensured the success of the attacks through their actions.'
The plaintiffs alleged that the attacks occurred between 2017 and 2024 and were carried out by external terrorist organizations such as Hamas, Hezbollah, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, ISIS, Kata'ib Hezbollah, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and al-Qaeda. They sought to attribute responsibility to Binance and CZ for hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency transactions and dealings with Iranian users.
The judge noted that while Binance and CZ may have been aware of the potential for their exchange to facilitate terrorist financing, their connection to the terrorist organizations was limited to 'accounts held by them or their affiliates on Binance and transactions conducted in a fair trading manner.' The judge also criticized the plaintiffs' 891-page, 3,189-paragraph complaint as 'entirely unnecessary' but allowed for amendments to be made.
A Binance spokesperson stated: 'The court correctly dismissed these baseless allegations. Binance strictly complies with regulatory requirements and has zero tolerance for illegal activities on its platform.' CZ also remarked that the plaintiffs were attempting to leverage Binance's November 2023 admission of violating anti-money laundering and sanctions laws, along with the $4.32 billion penalty paid, to seek triple damages.
