openclaw is way too token-hungry for doing tasks. Spent the whole night figuring out a free workaround, and here’s something that kinda works:
1. Spend 20u to get a Gemini subscription (20 bucks saved right there).
2. Use `brew install gemini-cli` to install the local version of Gemini, then run Gemini to connect to your subscription account.
3. When onboarding openclaw, choose CLI OAuth. This way, you can chat on openclaw using your subscription account. The downside is there’s an API rate limit and it’s kinda clunky, so it’s only good for simple tasks.
4. Spend another 20u to get a Claude subscription. Use `brew install --cask claude-code` to install it.
5. Go to https://(github.com)/alizarion/openclaw-claude-code-plugin, let openclaw read this GitHub repo, and install the plugin.
6. Now you can use openclaw as a bridge to run Claude CLI. Claude CLI is smarter and has fewer restrictions, so it can handle most tasks as long as they’re not super complex.
In the end, this is just a workaround because it relies on subscription accounts, which often come with unexpected issues. At best, it can handle moderately difficult tasks. If you really want to tackle big jobs, you’ll still need to burn tokens—and if you’re burning tokens, go for the most expensive one: Opus 4.6. After trying out all the other LLMs, you’ll realize they’re either less useful than subscription accounts or end up costing more than burning Opus tokens.
