[U.S. House of Representatives Calls for Termination of "Fentanyl" Tariffs on Canada]
On the 11th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution demanding that the federal government terminate the punitive tariffs imposed on Canadian goods. According to U.S. media reports, the resolution was passed with a vote of 219 in favor and 211 against, with six Republican representatives "defecting" to vote in favor. Analysts pointed out that the resolution will next be submitted to the Senate, where it has a high likelihood of passing, but it is ultimately very likely to be vetoed by President Donald Trump. Given the Republican majority in both the House and Senate, the "defection" of Republican lawmakers in the vote is highly symbolic. On February 1 last year, Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency, citing Canada and other countries' failure to effectively control the export of illegal drugs such as fentanyl. At the same time, he invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose additional tariffs on goods from Canada. (Xinhua News Agency)
