We are opening the IMEK Lab at a time when Jamaica is still recovering from Hurricane Melissa. For some, the hurricane may feel like the past, but for many families in the affected areas, it is still their everyday reality. I continue to visit these communities and I can see progress. Homes are being repaired, businesses are reopening, and roads are cleared. But I also see people still living under tarpaulins and families who are still struggling to rebuild. Hurricane Melissa was a very powerful storm that caused serious damage across the country. But beyond storms, Jamaica also faces other types of shocks, flooding, drought, high energy costs, and global supply disruptions. All of these shocks affect the average Jamaican. At the same time, the government must rebuild roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, electricity and water systems. This requires serious resources. While we appreciate the support and donations we receive, rebuilding a country takes strong planning, smart investment, and long-term thinking.(Andrew Holness)
