The New York Times: $28 billion in 'dirty money' has flowed into cryptocurrency trading platforms in the past two years, with Binance being one of the main recipients According to BlockBeats, on November 18th, The New York Times published an article titled "The $28 Billion 'Dirty Money' in the Cryptocurrency Industry," stating that in at least the past two years, up to $28 billion in funds directly related to illegal activities have flowed into major cryptocurrency trading platforms. These funds come from hackers, thieves, and extortionists, and can be traced back to North Korean cybercriminals, as well as fraud gangs from Minnesota, USA to Myanmar. Binance, the world's largest trading platform, is one of the main recipients of "dirty money" - it reached a $2 billion business partnership with the Trump family's cryptocurrency company in May of this year. At least 8 other well-known trading platforms have also received these funds, including OKX, which is rapidly expanding in the United States. The New York Times stated that its main findings include: After pleading guilty in 2023, Binance still received over $400 million in deposits from Huione Group in Cambodia, which the US Treasury Department has listed as a key node in criminal activity. This year, $900 million in funds from North Korean hackers have flowed into Binance deposit accounts. OKX received over $220 million in deposits from Huione within five months after reaching a $504 million settlement with the US government in February this year (violating the Currency Transfer Act). In 2024, global cryptocurrency trading platforms received at least $4 billion in fraud related funds, which ultimately flowed into large trading platforms such as Binance, OKX, Bybit, and HTX. Last year, over $500 million flowed into Binance, OKX, and Bybit from "crypto for cash" counters. These counters allow users to exchange digital currency for cash banknotes, and many operate in physical stores, providing convenient exit channels for criminals.
