Jamaica is on track to deliver on our national commitment to construct 70,000 new housing solutions, a key pillar of this administration’s strategy to expand access to affordable, quality housing across the island. The National Housing Trust (NHT) has been assigned responsibility for 43,000 of those units, and as of now, over 40,000 have already commenced construction. The Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) is contributing another 14,000 homes, with major developments like Bernard Lodge expected to deliver between 10,000 and 15,000 units. This administration has taken a supply-first approach, recognizing that meaningful housing policy must begin with increasing the number of available units before addressing demand dynamics. We cannot have a conversation about affordability or access without first resolving supply. That’s why we’ve been methodical in planning and executing these developments islandwide. From Manchester to St. James to St. Mary, I’ve been consistently breaking ground to signal to start of construction for new homes, month after month, year after year. These are not hurried responses. Each development is the result of years of behind-the-scenes planning, permitting, infrastructure coordination, and financing strategy. What you’re seeing today is the product of hard work started three, four, even five years ago. Our housing supply chain is active and expanding, and Jamaicans are beginning to see the results on the ground in their communities.
