Elon Musk's xAI is striving to catch up with its competitors in the programming AI sector, but the ongoing issue of internal talent loss continues to trouble this startup.
On Thursday, May 14, xAI launched its first AI programming agent Grok Build, challenging Anthropic's Claude. The product is currently in the early testing phase and is only available to paid subscribers.
xAI president Michael Nicolls has explicitly listed "reaching Claude's task performance level" as a recent goal for the company.
Programming is one of the most promising segments for the commercialization of AI. Musk himself has admitted that xAI has fallen behind competitors in this domain. The launch of Grok Build marks the official entry of this startup into the professional programming market.
Product Positioning: A Terminal Programming Tool for Professional Developers
Grok Build is delivered in the form of a command line interface (CLI) and runs directly on the user's terminal, first opened to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers.

According to xAI's official website, this agent can complete complex programming tasks based on user instructions and supports a "planning mode"—users can review, comment on, and even rewrite task plans before execution, with all code changes presented in a diff format for developers to track.
Another core function of the product is the parallel sub-agent mechanism: when faced with larger tasks, Grok Build can split the work and delegate it to multiple specialized sub-agents for simultaneous execution, and it supports deep code repository integration.

Additionally, this tool is compatible with existing AGENTS.md configurations, plugins, hooks, and MCP servers, reducing the migration costs for developers.

xAI states that the headless mode supports embedding agents in scripts and automation processes and provides full ACP protocol support for developers to build custom robots and agent orchestration applications.
Competition in the Programming AI Sector Intensifies
AI programming is currently recognized as a high-value market across the entire artificial intelligence industry, with Anthropic's Claude widely regarded as the industry benchmark in this niche.
xAI's entry into this space will further heat up competition. However, Grok Build is still in the early testing phase, and its actual performance and stability have yet to be validated by the market.
xAI has indicated that it will continuously iterate the product based on user feedback and has opened the /feedback command within the CLI for users to submit opinions directly to the team.
For investors, whether xAI can truly compete head-on with Claude under the dual pressure of talent turmoil and rapid product iteration will be a key variable to observe in the company's developmental trajectory.
Catching Up with Competitors While Internal Restructuring Concurrently Takes Place
xAI's move into the AI programming sector is part of a broader company restructuring plan.
Elon Musk is reshaping the image and strength of xAI in preparation for the IPO of its parent company, SpaceX. The restructuring measures include layoffs, signing new cooperation agreements, and a large-scale recruitment drive to fill the vacancies left by departing founding members.
In terms of collaboration, xAI signed an agreement last month with the AI programming tool company Cursor, covering cooperative programming capabilities and computing resource sharing. According to Bloomberg, Cursor engineers have recently begun working alongside the xAI team.
However, the pressure from talent loss has not dissipated.
According to Bloomberg, several core engineers from xAI's Palo Alto office have recently departed, including Devendra Chaplot, a co-founder of Mistral AI who just joined in March of this year, and Beibin Li, who was responsible for leading the post-training team.
