Cullen Roberts, BlackRock's Director of U.S. Wealth Advisory, believes that investing 1%-2% of total assets in Bitcoin is reasonable.

For decades, investors have relied on traditional assets like stocks for growth and bonds for stability.

As digital assets continue to gain favor, a question arises: what role should they play in a portfolio? We (BlackRock) believe that the unique characteristics of Bitcoin make it an appealing addition to a portfolio.

Bitcoin does have volatility. However, while Bitcoin may be viewed as a "high-risk" asset when considered in isolation, the risks it entails are somewhat different from the risks associated with stocks and bonds.

The value of Bitcoin is rooted in a shared belief and demand for a digital, decentralized alternative to global currency. Therefore, its inclusion in a traditional portfolio is complementary from the perspective of risk diversification.

Over time, as the barriers to Bitcoin adoption continue to decline, we have seen its value consistently rise.

Moreover, factors driving the popularity and adoption of Bitcoin include interest in sound monetary system alternatives, as well as a growing general preference for digital investments.

However, how much Bitcoin exposure should be allocated in a portfolio?

While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, research from BlackRock Investment Institute found that a modest allocation (typically around 1-2%) in a diversified portfolio could potentially have a positive impact on portfolio returns while not dominating everyday risks.

In the context of a 60/40 portfolio, a 1-2% allocation to Bitcoin contributes to overall portfolio risk at roughly the same level as the average risk contribution of one of the so-called "Magnificent Seven" stocks.

Therefore, for investors who believe in the digital transformation of currency, are optimistic about the growth of blockchain technology adoption, and can tolerate a certain level of volatility, Bitcoin can be viewed as an attractive complement as well as a unique portfolio diversification tool.
