The White House states that Iran's proposal is under discussion
The White House indicated that the proposal from Iran to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz is currently being discussed by senior U.S. officials.
Spokesperson Carolyn Levitt told reporters, "I can confirm that the president met with his national security team this morning. The meeting may still be ongoing or may have already concluded; the proposal was under discussion at that time."
Trump has insisted that Tehran must never possess nuclear weapons, and Levitt stated that he has made his red lines on the issue of Iran very, very clear.
A former senior U.S. official questioned the legitimacy of the suggestion reportedly made by Iran to the U.S., which involves reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war, but not restarting new nuclear negotiations.
Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Mark Kimmitt remarked that the Iranians "have created a bit of a judo-like clever maneuver by involving the Strait of Hormuz in the entire conflict."
"Now they are trying to use the Strait of Hormuz issue as leverage to delay further negotiations, which simply makes no sense. I don’t think the Americans will accept this," Kimmitt told Al Jazeera.
