Walking ten thousand steps every day is indeed a challenge.

Walking 10,000 steps every day is indeed a challenge; at least that's what I thought at first. However, I didn't expect it to help me so much!

I started in July last year in New Zealand purely out of boredom, and now I've managed to stick with it for exactly seven months. Aside from occasional physical discomfort, I mostly maintain around 10,000 steps.

In fact, using the word "persistence" isn't quite accurate.

Most of the time, there's no need to consciously persist because it has become a habit.

Once the body gets used to it, it becomes an automated process: structure → behavior repetition → nervous system adaptation → body "automation";

After several months in the same state, going to different places but doing the same thing, the brain categorizes it as "safe, familiar, low-risk behavior." The body starts to anticipate this activity, and if I don't do it on a given day, I feel incomplete, so there's no need to persist.

However, sometimes it is necessary, like today when the weather suddenly turned cold.

When I woke up this morning and felt the chill, my first instinct, like many others, was to not go out because the cold wind stings my face, it's raining outside, and I've been walking for so long already.

If you want, you can find a thousand reasons for your "because";

But in the end, I still went:

Since I usually walk by the river near my home, I told myself: no matter whether you walk or not, just go and if you don't want to walk after getting there, you can come back.

Then I parked the car, and my first feeling was: since I'm here, experiencing something different is also nice; the rain doesn't matter, just use an umbrella.

Unexpectedly, after I got out of the car and started walking, it felt very good because there were few people, and it was quiet. I could hear the sound of rain on the umbrella, see the thick fog by the river caused by the temperature difference, and hear the sound of boats' whistles and the wind. I quickly immersed myself in it.

Of course, after finishing, there is a sense of achievement.

I think we need a sense of achievement in life because after completing something, I feel there is dopamine secretion, which makes the brain more active and the mood happier.

Because you can see that you complete a definitive closed loop every day in a highly uncertain world (markets, emotions, relationships, judgments): 10,000 steps is something I can completely control, and whether I complete it or not is feedback that I receive immediately.

It doesn't rely on anyone or luck.

This sends a very strong signal to the brain: "I still have a sense of control over my life." This is actually very important; life needs a sense of control. Besides walking 10,000 steps, you can also:

Learn 10 new words every day, read a beautiful passage aloud every day, or spend half an hour playing with your child every day. Completing these can also make us happier.

So you see, on the surface, I am walking, but essentially I feel that I am using this activity to adjust my thinking habits while also training three more important abilities:

1️⃣ Making life feel "not out of control";

2️⃣ Liberating action from emotions when making decisions;

3️⃣ Using the lowest standards to achieve the highest continuity.

This is also why I allow myself to "go and come back," but I do not allow myself to "not go at all."

What truly changes us is largely a collection of small things!
