Today, in our hiking group, a sad story occurred. A woman fell into the sea near the MacLehose Trail (one of the top 10 hiking routes in the world) in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong police dispatched helicopters and speedboats for rescue, but the outcome was not satisfactory!

In recent years, the hiking community has become particularly popular, yet I have gradually lost my enthusiasm. Now, major outdoor brands are occupying the most prominent positions in shopping malls, selling outdoor gear at prices that are significantly marked up compared to overseas. With the exposure and collaboration of celebrities like Li Xian, many people who are not knowledgeable about the outdoors have joined in, buying a rain jacket or hiking shoes, and thus starting their hiking journey, perhaps without even a basic first aid kit in their backpacks. This is an extreme disrespect for life and health.

This year, I have hiked more than a dozen trails, my phone's photo album is getting fuller, yet my heart feels emptier, and it’s hard to find someone who shares the same hiking passion.

Before setting off, most of the hiking partners I arrange with are mostly thinking: "Will this route look good in photos?" "What should I wear to look good in pictures?" "Which angle is the best?" It seems like they are constantly anxious.

Upon reaching the summit, I skillfully find angles, adjust parameters, and pose, lining up to take pictures on the popular rocks, then looking down at the freshly edited grid, watching the likes slowly increase.

Then, on the way down, I hear my teammates chatting excitedly, the music from the Bluetooth speaker, and the never-ending photo requests, "Quick, take a picture of me!"

I suddenly miss it, I miss a kind of silent hiking. Just like the character played by Hiroshi Abe in the movie "Perfect Days," who rides his bicycle through Tokyo every day, quietly observing the changes in tree shadows, listening to the sound of the broom sweeping over fallen leaves, and eating a simple bento on a bench.

His "hiking" has no destination, only the process. No camera, only eyes. It is a kind of surrender to oneself, a state of meditation, where he feels his own joy and the flow of the present moment.

Hiking is not for checking in, nor is it for taking photos, but rather a dialogue with oneself, a sense of reverence after overcoming one challenge after another. Perhaps it’s better to turn off the phone and use our eyes and footsteps to feel the energy of the earth, the fresh breeze of nature, and the songs of birds. To revere nature, to revere oneself, perhaps that is the truest meaning of hiking! 🧐
