Lanzhanfei is a game blogger I have been following for a long time. I just finished reading about his experience, and it made my scalp tingle and my back chill!
If we follow the process in Northern Myanmar, after kidnapping, they would ask the family for money or cryptocurrency for ransom. Once the money arrives, they would directly dispose of the person in international waters. The fact that he is safe now is already the greatest luck!
I can't help but wonder, for those of us in the cryptocurrency circle who often travel for meetings, business trips, and socializing, are we also seen as walking ATMs by these gangs? 😂
First, let's state the conclusion of this matter:
99% of the money is unlikely to be recovered, regardless of the method. As long as it involves cross-border recovery, there are extremely complex legal barriers, difficulties in judicial cooperation, and technical walls.
Last time, another domestic blogger, "Brother Feng on the Run," also seemed to have encountered a similar kidnapping incident in Ukraine!
These gangs clearly prefer to target overseas Chinese who have some fame.
They know you probably have some money, know you are unfamiliar with the area, know you would rather lose money than confront them, and they know how to use domestic payment tools to drain you dry.
In the end, they let you go, and since it doesn't involve loss of life, they are too lazy to mobilize too many resources. Even if they want to investigate, they can't uncover anything significant.
It's quite chilling to think about! It also serves as a reminder for friends in the cryptocurrency circle and myself—
1⃣ People in the cryptocurrency circle like to share; meetings, hotels, lobbies, dinners, locations, and group photos are all posted on Twitter. (I also enjoy doing this, reflecting…)
Exposing your itinerary = exposing your risks; it's best to post all travel details only after completing them.
2⃣ Be cautious of airport pickups, meeting at hotel entrances, or invitations from someone’s friend to go out for a meal while abroad; try to arrange meetings in public places.
3⃣ The social scene in the cryptocurrency circle is inherently chaotic. Many people approach you under the guise of "KOL friends introducing" you. In gray area countries, such relationships are completely untrustworthy, and it's best not to mix with unfamiliar people.
4⃣ Never casually display your phone while out, and definitely do not perform asset operations.
