Here's a chilling thought—
While driving in New Zealand's South Island, I was suddenly pulled over by a police officer who informed me that I was speeding and issued a fine of 380 NZD.
The ticket was a very simple piece of paper, stating an amount of 380 dollars, and besides the ticket number, it only had the payment website, which felt very sketchy.
When I logged onto the website listed on the paper, I found that I had to fill in the amount myself. There was no need to enter my ticket number or license plate; it was just a payment interface asking me to input the amount.
I was taken aback, but since it was my first time being stopped by a police officer and I was in an unfamiliar place, I felt a bit intimidated, so I quietly accepted it without much communication (mainly because my English isn't very good, and I could only understand half of what was said).
However, the more I held onto the ticket, the more I felt something was off. So, I sent an email to the NZ traffic police to appeal, stating that I might have been speeding, but I did not exceed the speed limit by 20%, and I asked them to clarify the basis for such a heavy fine.
I just received this email:
They actually told me that there is no record of any fine against me, and I have a zero violation record.
This means that according to their records, my license plate and documents have not received any traffic violation tickets, so it seems I don't have to pay this fee.
So:
1️⃣ Who was the person that issued the ticket? Was it a real police officer or something else?
2️⃣ If I had paid the 380, where would the money have gone?
