New Zealand Childcare Record:

Day 2——

At least the child has successfully started school. After a series of busy tasks, I finally have time to sit down and write something quietly today.

I chose a small and beautiful church school in a small town for my child, mainly because the school's mission focuses on safety and mutual assistance. I looked at their annual information and some photos on Facebook, and the happiness on the children's faces was evident. Our child has a more sensitive personality, so I think a smaller group is more suitable for him to some extent.

Of course, I felt this atmosphere on the first day:

The enrollment process was simple and casual, without any fanfare. Each international student was paired with a buddy, and the child quickly adapted to everything, filled with curiosity and surprise. The school's educational model is completely different from the obedient-style education in our country; it encourages you to do what you like and promotes more outdoor activities and games. Most of the time, teachers are present, but they only observe and do not overly intervene in the children's behavior.

When entering the school, I noticed that only we Chinese students were wearing down jackets, even down pants. The temperature was around eight to nine degrees, which is quite cold, but other children were wearing shorts and thin tops, which amazed me! However, when in Rome, we couldn't possibly play with them in cotton pants, so we changed into the school uniform: shorts and long sleeves. Then I found that the child's adaptability exceeded my expectations; they soon felt warm. Plus, since most of the school activities were outdoors, they really weren't cold.

The most interesting part was their meals. At first, I thought it would be like in our country, with fixed meal times, but I later discovered there were no rules. If someone wanted to eat, they could raise their hand and go get their meal. The teacher would ask if anyone else wanted to eat, promoting a self-service model. You could go out to get your lunch box and continue eating while listening to the teacher explain the class material. Of course, this was excluded during group activities; you could have freedom, but you were also part of a group, and everyone needed to have that awareness.

Interestingly, on the first day, we brought Chinese food: rice + lamb + stir-fried vegetables. When our child opened the lunch box, the child next to them was astonished, as if their eyes were saying: Is this really his lunch? They looked incredulous, and it seemed they had never seen such a meal. Most foreign children brought Western-style lunches, like bread, yogurt, fruit, lunch meat, and some cereals. However, I noticed a positive aspect: they might find it strange, but they absolutely would not comment on your food or point fingers. Their mindset seems to be, I may not understand, but I respect your way of life. So, many children curiously looked at his meal, but no one commented, which is a rare quality.

Additionally, the outdoor teaching method, where most of the time is spent outside, really made the children happy, allowing them to freely express their athletic talents. My child excitedly told me: I was very excited because I beat the first place in our class. I felt that even though it was the first day, he started to occasionally speak some English, and I could clearly sense his satisfaction and happiness.

So when I picked him up, he couldn't wait to tell me on the way back that he was really happy. Although he didn't understand much, he was indeed infected by everyone's friendliness and joy. Writing in his diary that night was the best expression of his feelings:

He wrote in his diary:

Today was my first day of school in New Zealand! I was so happy because the school here is really fun. There’s a big playground where I can run and play. In class, we did lots of games instead of just studying. At the end of the day, there were even many toys to play with.

Going to school today didn’t feel tiring at all. It was such an interesting day!
