Cloud technology was not mature; it only developed in 2006, prior to which it was the development of virtualization technology. In 2000, VMware didn't even exist.

As for Red Hat, it's even harder to say. Who would have looked at Red Hat back then? It was just a small company, and later it also grew alongside the development of Linux.

What was Sun's true way out?

I believe it was to embrace the trend, and the trend was the open architecture of x86. If Sun had laid out its plans early, there were several places in this value chain where it could have established a foothold, such as server operating systems, competing with Linux/Windows. I believe Sun had the strength to do that.
