The purpose of the imperial examination was for the emperor to avoid excessive reliance on the aristocracy and to win over small landowners.

However, the imperial examination was still not very useful during the Tang Dynasty, as the power of the aristocracy remained strong. Those who succeeded in the examination still had to rely on imperial authority or wealthy families to obtain official positions.

The Tang Dynasty had significant issues in its power structure design, far inferior to that of the Han Dynasty. This was especially evident later on when the position of the military governor (jiedushi) emerged, leading to uncontrollable consequences.

By the time of the Song Dynasty, lessons were learned from the Tang Dynasty, and there was a full effort to support the scholar-officials. The imperial examination truly flourished during the Song. However, this also led to a problem: the actual power of the state was in the hands of the scholar-officials, and imperial authority sometimes resembled a rubber stamp.
